Wellington Road/Souter Head Road Junction Improvement - CLOSED, ARCHIVE CONSULTATION

Aberdeen City Council are consulting on the above key proposal to improve transport access to Aberdeen from the south.

The need for a scheme at this location has been identified through the 'Access from the South' study which identified potential solutions for implementation in line with the Regional and Local Transport Strategies. The objectives of this study were to develop options for improving traffic flows on the southern approaches to the City. The study identified the potential for traffic signal improvements at the Wellington Road/Souter Head Road junction.

Consideration is being given to replacing the existing roundabout with two linked traffic signal junctions. The junction is partly signalised at present, however, during peak periods the legs of the junction that are not controlled by signals experience significant delays. It is predicted that the introduction of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route and future growth associated with the emerging Local Development Plan will lead to significant traffic increases along the Wellington Road Corridor.

Work is therefore being progressed to identify an optimum improvement at the junction that will increase and more evenly distribute the available capacity, while also providing significant benefits to pedestrian and cycling through the installation of signalised junctions. The consultation ran from 12 July to 3 August 2010 with a public event held on 28 July 2010 and both a print and electronic questionnaire being available. The pdf version can be seen here:

Three options have been looked at in detail. They are all effective in reducing overall delay but have different impacts on routes through the junction and on the surrounding area. For details of the proposals including layouts and operational information please click on the following links:
