A Tree for Every Resident - ARCHIVE, CLOSED CONSULTATION
Local residents are being urged to have their say on plans by Aberdeen City Council to plant 180,000 trees by spring 2012.
The first phase will see 100,000 trees planted between February 2010 and April 2011.
A further 80,000 will be planted the following year as part of a major contribution to meeting the City Council's commitment to plant a tree for every resident and under the city's commitment to International Year of Biodiversity in 2010. More than 20,000 trees have already been planted over the last few years.
Local residents will have the chance to see the planting plans for their area at a series of sessions where council officers will be available to answer questions and collect comments to help shape the final designs. The first two dates are:
- Tuesday 01 December, Alex Collie Centre, Bridge of Don, 4pm 6.30pm;
- Tuesday 08 December at Kincorth Library, 1pm 5pm.
The plans will also be circulated to community councils for them to consider and are available to download from the links below.
Housing and Environment Committee convener Councillor Aileen Malone said: "This is a very exciting project which will see new or enlarged woodlands being created for future generations. It is certainly the biggest tree-planting programme the city has seen for a very long time and will provide excellent habitat for many birds and other animals to thrive in, as well as places to walk and explore close to where people live.
"I would urge people to get along to their local information session to influence the plans, because these are going to be community woods for local people as well as magical places for wildlife."
Ten sites have been chosen for the first 100,000 trees in places where extra planting can extend existing woodland or help to join up isolated blocks to create better wildlife habitats.
Most of the trees will be Scottish native species and the new areas will be designed to provide public access, opportunities for recreation and healthy exercise, and to help connect people and communities with their local woodlands.
