Aberdeen EcoCity Awards
The winners of the 2009 Aberdeen EcoCity Awards were announced at a special ceremony at the City of Aberdeen Highland Games on Sunday 21 June.
The award scheme recognises and rewards charities, voluntary groups, business and educational bodies who have done their bit to protect and improve our local environment. With awards split into 3 categories -
- Charities/ Community and Voluntary Groups
- Educational Bodies
- Overall Gold Award
Category winners each received £500 to spend on an environmental project of their choice.

Robert Gordon University
Woolmanhill Energy Challenge 2009
A competitive four-week challenge to raise awareness of energy efficiency, aimed at students living in university accommodation. The initiative highlighted the savings which could be gained from simple energy-saving measures and encouraged a positive behavioural change within the students.

Able To Do Your Bit
An awareness campaign designed to engage staff and raise awareness about their impact on the environment. It was designed to be adaptable, accessible and visually striking.
Charities/ Community and Voluntary Groups category
Winner
Heathryfold Allotment Holders Association
Regeneration of Allotments
A project restored an unused allotments and raised awareness of the benefits of having an allotment. The project encourages all community members to participate and promotes life-long learning to its members.
Highly Commended
Aberdeen Greenspace
Northfield Greenspace Project
A local community project to create a more attractive green space for people and wildlife in the Northfield/Cummings Park area. The project involved planting 2,500 native trees and installing a mural on a wall on Northfield Swimming Pool, which was covered in graffiti.
Gold Award
A further Gold Award was presented to the best overall environmental project, winning an additional prize fund of £1,000.

How can I enter the awards?
To be eligible environmental projects need to have taken place in the last twelve months (1 April 2008 to 31 March 2009).
The initiative may either be entered by the organiser, or be nominated by another. Entries from organisers based outside of Aberdeen are welcomed, but the initiative must have taken place within Aberdeen City.

The 2008 Aberdeens EcoCity Awards were presented at a special ceremony at Aberdeen Blooms on Saturday 30 August by Blue Peter Gardener, Chris Collins and Councillor Ron Clark.
The Aberdeen EcoCity Awards are run by the city councils, EcoCity team. The 2008 awards were funded by Aberdeen Airport, Keenans Recycling, The Junction, EnviroCentre and Wood Group.
