Case Studies

The main activities of the Wardens tend to emerge from issues they encounter during their daily high visibility patrols throughout the city. These actions make a real difference to the lives of local residents and give many people reassurance and peace of mind.

Road Safety Initiative

In February 2011 the City Wardens launched a media campaign to help stop parents parking illegally outside schools whilst dropping off their children.

For some time the Wardens had been aware of considerable road safety issues caused by parents parking on the 'school keep clear' markings and yellow lines. Vehicles parking in these areas cause blind spots and increase the potential for a child to be injured. Most schools in Aberdeen were affected in some way by this problem - some more so than others.

The Wardens had previously tried to educate parents by going to the schools however, given the scale of the problem the Wardens decided to launch a high profile campaign involving Grampian Police, Ashley Road School and the Evening Express.

On launch day banners produced by Ashley Road pupils were displayed outside the school and pupils supported by a teacher handed out road safety pamphlets to parents as they collected their children. A reporter and photographer from the Evening Express also attended as did Cllr Martin Greig the local councillor for the area.

The Wardens will repeat this successful project during the course of the year promoting road safety as everyone's responsibility and educating parents that simple changes in personal driving behaviour can have a positive impact upon safe road use.

Word with the Wardens

During February and March 2011 the City Wardens held surgeries with residents living in Northfield, Middlefield/Cummings Park and Heatheryfold.

Residents highlighted issues including vandalism and antisocial behaviour within tenements. In many instances residents had not reported these problems in the past. Police and Housing Officers were also in attendance and issues were dealt with where possible.

The sessions have helped the Wardens identify areas where regular priority patrols should be undertaken.
