Counterfeit Goods

Counterfeit goods are basically illegal copies of well known brand name products. 'Designer' clothes, computer software as well as 'chart topping' music and films on CD, video and DVD are commonly counterfeited. Other products that have been targeted by counterfeiters include car parts, food and medicines.

The use of counterfeit software can invalidate manufacturers' warranties in the event of damage being caused to the hardware used to play them back. The Trading Standards Service takes action to halt the sale of these goods both to protect the genuine manufacturers and retailers but also to protect consumers as many counterfeit goods are of poor quality and unsafe.

In the worst instances, reports can be prepared for the consideration of the Procurator Fiscal.
