Aberdeen In Bloom
Aberdeen in Bloom is an initiative led by The City Council that aims to improve the environmental quality of the City for residents and visitors. This is carried out by council staff and a number of local volunteer In Bloom groups across the city. Further information is also available from the Aberdeen In Bloom 2008 brochure.
In Bloom Competitions
Aberdeen has been involved with the Britain in Bloom Competition since 1963 winning the Best Overall Trophy for the first time in 1965. Since then Aberdeen has won both Britain in Bloom and Beautiful Scotland in Bloom trophies on numerous occasions. Other Competitions include Nations in Bloom, World in Bloom and Communities in Bloom which Aberdeen entered for the first time in 2003 and won The International Large City Category twinned with Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Last year Aberdeen won the Beautiful Scotland city award along with the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society Trophy and the Best Floral Displays Award in the Communities in Bloom competition.
Winter/Spring 2008 Update
Community groups across the city have been busy planting a range of spring flowering bulbs. Around 100,000 bulbs were distributed to local groups at the end of last year.
All primary schools in Aberdeen have been sent details of the Design a Flower Bed competition which is now in its second year. Three flower beds on Great Southern Road will be planted up with the winning designs.
Aberdeen and the community of Dyce have been nominated through to the Britain in Bloom finals. Britain in Bloom judges will visit the city in the Spring to carry out an unannounced judging of the city. They will then return in August for an official tour of the city.
In July judges from Communities in Bloom will also visit the city to carry out an evaluation for the International Challenge category of their competition.
Garden Competition
Aberdeen City Council holds a Best Garden competition annually. Details of the 2007 competition are now available. Download a copy of the Aberdeen In Bloom Cometition Entry Form 2008.
