Torry Works is a job fair with a difference
18/08/08
A training, skills development and job opportunities fair will take place on Thursday, 28 August, from 11am until 7pm at Tullos Community Centre, Girdleness Road, Aberdeen.
The initiative, which has been jointly organised by the city council and Jobcentreplus, will give local folk of all ages the opportunity to talk with specialists and advisors from the business, voluntary and public sectors about how and where they can find training and jobs opportunities.
Organisations represented at the event include Royal Mail, NHS Grampian, Stagecoach and Clydesdale Bank.
Council staff will be on hand at the event to seek views from visitors on local issues. The council will also take the opportunity to announce a new initiative with the University of Aberdeen on the development of the South Aberdeen Coastal Regeneration Project.
The main aim of this project will be to work with young people in the wider community on the rich maritime and natural heritage of Torry and the south of the city.
Jobcentreplus customer service operations manager Sheena Ogg said: We are delighted to be in partnership with Aberdeen City Council and the Torry community, working together to help local people back to work.
Our advisors will be on hand to give information and advice about how much better off people can be in work, rather than on benefits.
Gordon McIntosh, corporate director for neighbourhood services south said: We hope people will come along to this event to meet up with organisations that are committed to Torry today and beyond. I will be at the fair in the late afternoon and hope to meet local folk and hear what they have to say about this event and other issues affecting their community.
Working together with the business community to host events such as this will provide a focus for the development of new opportunities which will build on the good work that is already being done in Torry.
Geoff Runcie, chief executive of the Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce said: "I am delighted to be taking part in the Torry Works event and believe that initiatives like this are vital to ensuring that everyone knows what is going on in their community in relation to job vacancies and training. There are exciting work opportunities across the city and shire, with businesses of every type keen to find good people."
The event is free and a crèche will be available throughout the day.
