Winter maintenance crews work through the big chill
18/11/08
The maintenance work of salting and ploughing Aberdeens roads and pavements has begun with the onslaught of winter.
The maintenance programme will be similar to that seen in previous years. Overnight salting and snow clearing work will be carried out as normal.
Aberdeen experienced early ice and snow this year, with a cold snap at the end of October. Although the winter maintenance operations had not commenced at that time, the crews were called in and provided the usual high standard of service until the weather improved.
The Winter Maintenance Plan is now up and running, and the nightshift is already in operation. Early morning operations will commence at 4.45am on 24 November
Footpath maintenance work will begin at 7.45am, as necessary.
Council employees carry out salting and snow clearing work on all city roads on a priority basis, apart from trunk roads, which are managed by BEAR Scotland. The trunk roads are: the A90 Stonehaven road; Anderson Drive; North Anderson Drive; Mugiemoss Road; The Parkway; Ellon Road; and the A96 from the Haudagain roundabout west along Auchmill Road and Inverurie Road.
Grit boxes will be filled and residents are reminded that the grit is there for public use, as well as for the use of council staff. If a grit box needs to be refilled, please call 08456 080919 and leave a message, stating the location of the box.
Motorists are reminded to drive according to the conditions, and are asked to be patient while salting and snow clearing work is carried out. The worst time to tackle any snowfall is during peak periods with the gritters and snowploughs being stuck in traffic queues. To combat this, salting and snow clearing work will routinely begin in the early hours to try to avoid disruption as far as possible.
Please bear in mind that all roads cannot be treated simultaneously. If there is a particular problem on a road, please call the Aberdeen City Council contact centre on 08456 080919.
Aberdeen City Council has published a Winter Advice leaflet which gives guidance about motoring during the winter months. These leaflets are available from libraries, community centres, The Point and St Nicholas House.
Local and national TV and radio stations and text services provide a useful source of information for motorists and travellers during inclement weather conditions.
