Waste Aware team adds dates to its summer tour

06/08/08

Aberdeen City Council’s waste awareness team has added more dates to its programme of events this summer, when it will be promoting ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.

The team will be giving away reusable recycling sacks, as well as providing information on how many items of household waste can be reused.

For example old clothes, books, CDs and bric-a-brac in good condition can be donated to local charity shops.

Items like broken furniture, scrap metals and old paints can be taken to recycling centres, along with rubble from the garden.

Waste aware marketing officer Linda Jordinson said: ”Summer is a great time to tidy the home and garden.  Many items in good condition can be donated to charity shops. Items that can not be reused can be recycled at points throughout the city.

“As the weather gets warmer, it is the prefect time to start composting at home.  Grass clippings, hedge prunings, dead leaves and flowers can all be put into a home composting unit, with green cone waste digesters composting all kinds of kitchen waste.”

At the events there will also be an opportunity for Aberdeen residents to buy a cut-price green cone to help with recycling this summer. These  food digesters can be ordered from the team at a cost of £10, including delivery.

The waste awareness team will be at the following events:
• Thursday 7 August, Mall Trinity, 9am - 4pm;
• Saturday 16 August, Sheddocksley Baptist Church Open Day, noon - 4pm;
• Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August, Aberdeen in Bloom, Hazlehead Park, 10am - 4pm. A free-entry competition with a green cone food digester as the prize will run each day;
• Monday 1 September, Mall Trinity, 9am - 4pm;
