Library makes family history research easy and affordable

22/08/08

Aberdeen City Libraries has signed up to a scheme to allow citizens to research their family tree at a discount rate.

The library service has joined the national ScotlandsPeople Public Library Voucher Scheme, which gives customers affordable access to the ScotlandsPeople website.

The website is the official government source for genealogical data for Scotland, run by a partnership between the General Register Office for Scotland, the National Archives of Scotland and the Court of the Lord Lyon. The site is enabled by brightsolid, formerly Scotland Online, and can be accessed at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

The website carries most of the Statutory Registers of Births, Marriages and Deaths from 1855, Old Parish Registers prior to 1855, census records from 1841–1901 and wills and testaments up to 1901. More records are added every year.

The sign-up to the voucher scheme means that instead of registering online and buying 30 credits for £6, library customers can purchase £6 starter vouchers to get 60 credits or £4.80 top-up vouchers to get 30 credits.

Vouchers are on sale now in the Information Centre in the Central Library.  Information Centre staff can also help customers to use their vouchers for the first time and advise them on how to search the records on the website.

For further information, contact the library’s Local Studies department on (01224) 652512, or e-mail LocalStudiesLibrary@aberdeencity.gov.uk.
