Inspectors praise Aberdeen primary school

06/06/07

The report by HM Inspectors of Education on their recent visit to Victoria Road School has been published.

It identifies the key strengths of the school and the main points for action that need to be addressed by the school and education authority.

Gordon McIntosh, Corporate Director Neighbourhood Services South, welcomed the inspectors’ findings.

He said he was particularly happy that the quality of the curriculum was good, broad and balanced, and effectively promoted pupils’ personal and social development.

Mr McIntosh was also pleased to note that the quality of pupils’ learning was good, with pupils at the early stages being particularly enthusiastic about their learning.

He noted that the quality of teaching was good and that teachers explained new work clearly, varying their approaches well. Teachers also questioned pupils skilfully in order to check their understanding and to engage them in their learning.

While recognising that the school provided a positive learning environment with caring and committed staff, the report identified that there is a challenge to raise attainment.

Mr McIntosh said he appreciated the Inspectors’ assessment made to date and added: "I am pleased that this report highlights many of the school's positive qualities and strengths, including the very good leadership for the school. We will continue to work with Victoria Road School, especially in addressing the main points of action identified in the report.”

Mr McIntosh acknowledged that this was a good report, which clearly recognised the efforts of the pupils and staff, and said everyone associated with the school should be pleased with this report.
