Local couple’s dedication recognised by the United Nations Association
26/05/08
Two Aberdeen stalwarts of the United Nations Association have been honoured for giving nearly ninety years of service between them to the Association.
The Lord Provost of Aberdeen, Peter Stephen, and well-known comedian Buff Hardie will jointly present Laurence and Sheila Reid with their United Nations UK Certificate of Honorary Life Membership at 4.30pm in the Lord Provosts sitting room at the Town House, on Tuesday, 27 May, 2008.
Laurence and Sheila joined the Aberdeen Branch of the United Nations Association over forty years ago, and were Treasurer and Secretary respectively for nearly 30 years. As well as helping to organise meetings on major world issues, they also ran a regular fundraising stall - with baked goods, plants, Christmas cards and information at the charities fair in the Music Hall.
Their certificate has been signed by United Nations Association UK Chairman, Lord Hannay of Chiswick.
Buff Hardie, who recently received the Freedom of the City and is a longstanding local member of United Nations Association, former local MP, Malcolm Savidge, who is a Vice-President of UNA-UK and President of UNA-Scotland, along with other members from the local branch will also attend the event.
Lord Provost of Aberdeen, Peter Stephen said: It is wonderful to see a local couple who have given over forty years of voluntary service to a world-wide organisation being recognised nationally.
