Museums on the move

Aberdeen City Councils Art Gallery & Museums as part of its membership of the Northeast Museums Partnership (NEMP) hopes to attract new audiences by displaying their collections in non-museum locations.
The first exhibition of household items from the early 20th century will be revealed to the public at 11am on Wednesday, 27th August in Tullos Community Centre, Girdleness Road, Aberdeen.
The Regional Development Challenge Fund (RDCF) which was set up by the Scottish Executive in 2004 aims to develop the sustainability of the museum sector through partnership work.
There were ten projects, one of which is the Northeast Museums Partnership (NEMP). NEMP is a partnership between Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council and the University of Aberdeen.
Aberdeen City Council is the lead partner in the project and has a remit to work with new audiences (non traditional museum goers) by promoting the regions museums and collections through various initiatives such as talks, walks, tours and visits.
A key aim of the project is to take museum objects out of storage and put them in community locations. Each venue is recognised as being an important hub for the community while the objects chosen are seen to have universal appeal. The four venues are:
Linksfield community centre
Powis House community centre
Summerhill community centre
Tullos community centre
Each case will remain in these venues for a year with the objects being changed quarterly to give visitors to the opportunity to view all the items in the collection. Items include household articles, kitchen/cooking items and toys from the early to mid 20th century.
Graeme Milne, new audiences access officer, Aberdeen City Council said: The cases will be in accessible areas of the community centres so it is hoped that when visitors attend their usual activities they will also take time out to view the museum items on display.
It is hoped that this will encourage visitors to seek out further aspects of the collection by visiting city museums and benefit those who either do not have the time or confidence to visit museums by giving them something of interest to look at in their community.
