The transformation of Torry
26/05/08
Local regeneration in Torry is set to take shape this summer thanks to the City Council working in partnership with key organisations.
In April 2008 planning consent was granted for a joint development at Greyhope Road, led by Grampian Housing Association and Scottish Natural Heritage for new family houses and a local headquarters for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). This development links to the well-advanced plans for the creation of the new facilities for the Fisheries Research Station at Victoria Road.
Aberdeen City Council, in recognition of the loss of amenity ground at the top of Victoria Road, is now refurbishing the Torry Outdoor Sports Centre to secure wider use by nearby schools and the wider community for the currently under-used facility.
The old tennis courts are being upgraded with a multi-use surface that will enable tennis, hockey, and a variety of small-scale sports to be played. Football will take place at the recently completed facilities at Tullos.
Council officers will now work on new proposals to enable community organisations to use these local facilities with a minimum of fuss. Work at the Torry Outdoor Sports Centre will also see the replacement of a dangerous retaining wall which has reached the end of its life after 75 years.
Gordon McIntosh, Corporate Director for Neighbourhood Services Area South, said: The City Council is committed to playing its part in bringing new investment and facilities to Torry, to create family-friendly environments and leisure facilities that will make Torry an even better place to live and work. We will continue to work with community organisations to improve the quality of life in the area.
