Textile recycling on the increase in Aberdeen
26/06/08
The amount of clothing, shoes and other textiles collected for reuse and recycling via the network of charitable textile recycling points in Aberdeen has risen by nearly 12% over the past year.
In 2006/07, 227,663kg of textiles were collected for reuse and recycling. In 2007/08, this figure has jumped to 254,408kg - an increase of 11.75%.
This reflects the increased number of textile recycling points in Aberdeen. There are now 39 recycling points across the city 23 of which can take textiles - as well as numerous charity shops which accept not only clothes and shoes for re-use and sale, but also bric-a-brac, household items and, in some cases, furniture. Aberdeen also has four recycling centres.
Councillor Ron Clark, Lead Member on the Waste Management Working Group, said; "By recycling textiles, clothes, shoes and toys, Aberdeen citizens have managed to save over two tonnes of materials from landfill, as well as allow other people to enjoy them for a second or even third time. It is such an easy way help the environment and the community."
