Aberdeen areas to benefit from on-street recycling

25/08/08

Residents in areas of Aberdeen are to benefit from a new on-street recycling scheme.

The scheme, to be introduced Monday, 8 September, will help residents to recycle their waste in a convenient way.

Some of the on-street refuse bins will be converted to silver bins with blue lids.  These lids are adapted to allow residents to recycle cardboard and paper.

Streets to be given the on-street recycling bins are Great Western Place, Granton Place, Ashvale Place, Hollybank Place and Howburn Place.

Residents affected by these changes will receive leaflets explaining the service and how it operates. The leaflet also offers people the opportunity to receive a free reusable sack to store and carry items to be recycled.

The new bins mark the third stage of plans to provide recycling facilities to residents living in tenements and multi-story housing throughout the city who cannot take advantage of kerbside recycling.

Residents in the Rosemount area recently benefited from these changes and the service has been very well received.

Lord Provost Peter Stephen commented: “We are pleased to be offering this service to more residents.  We have a goal of 40% recycling in Aberdeen and the addition of these bins will keep us moving in the right direction.

“I would encourage the residents to embrace the new service as they did in the Rosemount area in an effort to divert waste from landfill."
