Free bus tour of Torry churches

30/09/08

A free tour of Torry kirks will take place next Thursday [9 October] as part of the Seniors in the City festival.

Torry features a number of extremely different and exciting churches reflecting the history of the place and different styles over the centuries.

The tour will take in the ruined St Fittick’s church in the Bay of Nigg, which was first used as a church in the 12th century. The church and yard feature a number of intriguing features, including the remains of a jougs chain to which people were chained up as a punishment and a Watchers’ House – a relic from the dark days of body snatching.

The tour will also include a visit to Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church on Grampian Road. This is an outstanding church built in a style which is very unusual in the Aberdeen area. The tour will finish at Torry St Fittick’s Church on Walker Road.

The tour will be led by Chris Croly, assistant keeper (research) with volunteer Frank Donnelly, both of Aberdeen City Council’s Archaeology Unit, and retired planning director Norman Marr.

Mr Croly said: “This is a great opportunity to explore the fascinating and varied heritage of Torry. People have lived and worshiped in this area for at least 1,000  years. The different churches in Torry reflect the changes in Scottish history over the centuries.

Please note that although this is a bus tour a certain amount of walking and climbing stairs will be involved.

Places are free but limited and booking is essential. To book a place call 01224 523640.
