Home in on safety

24/07/08

Grampian Police and Aberdeen City Council have joined forces to cut crime in the city.

An interactive home safety website and accompanying CD have been created to make people more aware about home safety and security. They will be launched at the Goodapple Homes Tenants Open Day on Saturday [26 July].

The website, produced by local company R2S Technologies, tests the user’s home safety knowledge and is packed with information to help them make their homes safer and more secure.

Users can navigate their way around a real home, going from room to room; to the garage; the shed; and even to the car and outside the front and rear of the house. The aim is to provide information to help make people more aware of potential safety hazards and educate them about crime prevention around their homes.

The easy-to-use design and interactive features of the website and CD mean that people of all ages can sit down and have fun whilst learning about safety and security around the home. There are 87 items of security and safety information around the home for users to locate.

Although the number of house breaks have dramatically reduced in Aberdeen over the years, it does still happen and can be very upsetting for victims. It is hoped the website and CD will help to teach people to reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

Grampian Police Crime Reduction Officer Jim Watson said, “This is a fantastic new way to get a safety and security message across to the public. Too often we are bombarded with leaflets on all subjects.

“Nowadays almost everyone has access to the internet or a computer and this unique interactive website and CD allows people to get all their home security and safety information in one place. If people implement just the basics of what they see on the site then it would make a huge difference to the amount of homes that are broken into and accidents around the home''.

The Home In on Safety web site is at www.grampian.police.uk/homeinonsafety or www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/homeinonsafety
