Rolling Stones' work may gather some moss
07/08/08
Green fingered rockers have created a terrace garden in Aberdeen by building a drystane dyke.
The Rolling Stones group has been working on the Healthy Roots community garden in Aberdeens Middlefield area. They have created the structure to provide some security and wind shelter for the garden.
It also provided the Stones, who are members of Therapeutic Gardening a horticulture group run by and for disabled people with an interesting new challenge which allowed them to learn new skills while creating something really substantial and solid which will hopefully weather the test of time.
Their project is backed by Aberdeen City Councils community placement team.
Lead stone layer, Stan Moyes, said, We have had a great time producing the walls, just like the band!"
The Rolling Stone Group is supported by Aberdeen City Councils community placement team.
Healthy Roots, also known as Middlefield Community Gardens, has several aims. These include the regeneration of the Middlefield area; the provision of play areas and activities for local children; the provision of cheap, home grown fruit and vegetables which are sold through the local food co-operative and other outlets to promote healthy eating; to improve the local environment; and to provide horticultural therapy.
The Healthy Roots project was developed partly by organisations for people with disabilities or mental health problems. Gardening work is popular with the users of these groups as it provides relaxation, social activity, a sense of purpose and training in useful skills.
Healthy Roots provides a site where groups like Rolling Stones can work, without having to take on a site of their own. Support and training is available to groups which would like to do horticultural therapy work in the gardens.
