01/09/08

School pupils have teamed up with north-east celebrity Robbie Shepherd to broadcast a Doric radio show promoting new poetry book Fit Like, Yer Majesty?

The one-hour special will be broadcast on SHMU 99.8FM from 11am until noon on Thursday [September 4].

In the hot seat are five presenters from Hanover Street School: Grant Bilsland; Jack McLean; Naomi Grieve; Chelsea Angelo; and Campbell Wilson. The whole show will be in Doric and features include:
• An interview with local celebrity Robbie Shepherd, who gives the youngsters some very useful tips on radio presenting;
• An interview with local poet, storyteller and author Sheena Blackhall who has several poems in the new anthology;
• Top ten 21st Century Doric phrases;
• Interviews with parents at Hanover Street School about the Doric words they use the most;
• Interviews with Hanover Street School staff about their attitudes to using Doric in the classroom;
• Dramatised readings from Fit Like, Yer Majesty?

The pupils worked with their class teacher Gill Graham to produce and present the show. Miss Graham said: “This has been an amazing learning opportunity that really saw the children engage in the curriculum”

Campbell Wilson said of his experience “I was very proud of myself because I didn’t think I could speak on air, but I did and now I know I can.”

The Reading Bus presents a weekly radio show in partnership with Station House Media Unit every Thursday morning from 11am – 12 noon.

On Thursday, 11 September, youngsters from Kittybrewster will present another Doric broadcast about Fit Like, Yer Majesty? and the following Thursday [18 September] a broadcast about the actual launch of the book at a special event at Fyvie Castle will be aired.
