Nominations sought for prestigious award
03/10/08
The Lord-Lieutenant of the City of Aberdeen, the Lord Provost Peter Stephen, is calling on residents to nominate groups for the Queens Award for Voluntary Service.
The award, which is a prestigious national honour for groups and equivalent to the MBE, recognises the outstanding contributions made to local communities by groups voluntarily devoting their time for the benefit of others. It also sets the national benchmark for excellence in volunteering.
Lord-Lieutenant Peter Stephen said: Voluntary groups across Aberdeen are vital to all aspects of community life, especially as times are becoming more trying.
The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service has proved an important way of bringing recognition to those often hidden groups which have dedicated themselves, in some cases over many years, to improving local people's lives. If you know a group in your area, do get out there and nominate!
Since the award was created by the Queen in 2002 to mark her Golden Jubilee, more than 600 groups around the UK, including three from Aberdeen, have received Queens Award for Voluntary Service.
Winners were nominated by members of the public who have been helped personally or witnessed the benefits of a groups work in their community.
They include Aberdeen Arts Centre which offers inexpensive and high quality theatre space to all arts and drama groups within Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire, and Aberdeen City Mission which offers city centre and community outreach to people who are in need and in crisis.
