Unveiling of portrait launches Duthie Park Anniversary celebrations
01/07/08
Lord Provost, Peter Stephen, will be unveiling a newly restored portrait of Miss Elizabeth Crombie Duthie on Thursday [3 July].
The unveiling marks the launch of a programme of events to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Duthie Park.
Miss Crombie Duthie gifted the park, in her name, to the city of Aberdeen in 1883. She wanted to create a public park in memory of her uncle and brother.
Renowned local artist James Coutts Michie painted the portrait in 1885. It was then donated to the city to thank Miss Crombie Duthie for her kindness.
There is a range of activities planned to mark the anniversary, which will culminate in a Victorian-themed event in the park on Sunday, 14 September. Members of the public will be encouraged to dress in Victorian clothing, with a prize for the best costume.
Other attractions will include brass bands playing in the bandstand, games and cookery demonstrations with a Victorian feel, displays of Victorian railway models, an exhibition on the parks history and a chance to ride in an open-topped horse-drawn carriage.
