Be on guard for City’s third Doric fencing competition

27/06/08

The Beach Leisure Centre Doric Fencing Open will take place on Saturday, 5 July and Sunday, 6 July, 2008 in Aberdeen.

It is a six-weapon competition so there will be men and women's events in the three fencing disciplines of foil, epee and sabre.

Now into its third year, the Northeast's only senior fencing competition hopes to build on the success of previous years, which attracted over a hundred entries from the UK and Europe.

With this in mind, this year’s event has moved to the larger and better-equipped venue, the City Council’s Beach Leisure Centre, Beach Promenade, Aberdeen.

Doric Open Fencing competition chairman Euan Michie said "We were delighted to secure the excellent facilities at the Beach Leisure Centre for this year’s event, and would like to thank everyone at the centre for their help and support.

“Everyone involved in the Beach Leisure Centre Doric Open has worked hard to develop the event and we felt that having the competition at the centre is the next step in making it one of the most successful events in Scotland.”

With less than a week until the competition gets underway entries are still flooding in. Competitors from Shetland to Truro have entered the competition however there will also be a strong local challenge again this year.

Fencers representing Aberdeen City Fencing Club took two of the six titles last year, and hopes are high that the Aberdeen City club will be able to claim the best club award this year and deprive Dundee Fencing Club of a 3rd straight title.

Fencing is a growing sport in Aberdeen with the local clubs seeing a strong increase in members over the last couple of years, and the Beach Leisure Centre Doric Fencing Open gives these fencers a great opportunity to compete at home.

People wishing to find more information on fencing, or are interested in taking up the sport should visit the club’s section www.britishfencing.com to find local clubs.
