Art Gallery & Museums new opening hours introduced

28/07/08

Art Gallery & Museums revised opening hours will take effect from Monday, 4 August 2008.

The new opening times, which were approved by the Policy & Strategy Committee, will bring the city’s Art Gallery & Museums into line with major cultural capitals.

Monday is the ‘traditional’ day for museums to close in continental countries and visitors from overseas will be accustomed to planning their cultural visits around a Monday closure.

Arrangements will be made to open venues on Aberdeen City Council-designated public holiday Mondays.  This will support the council’s drive to promote the city as a weekend holiday destination and in recognition of the museum service’s role as a regional centre which people may wish to visit on a Holiday Monday. This would apply to five public holidays: Easter Monday, Spring Monday, May Day Monday, Midsummer Holiday and Autumn Holiday.

The new opening times, which are budget-led, are as follows:

Aberdeen Art Gallery
• Tues - Sat 10am – 5pm
• Sunday - 2pm – 5pm
• Closed Monday

Aberdeen Maritime Museum
• Tues - Sat 10am – 5pm
• Sun – 12noon – 3pm
• Closed Monday

Provost Skene’s House
• Mon – Sat  - 10am – 5pm
• Closed Sunday

Tolbooth Museum (seasonal July – September)
• Tues – Sat – 10am – 5pm (closing for 1 hour at lunchtime)
• Last admission 4.15pm
• Sunday – 12.30pm – 3.30pm
• Closed Monday

Monday closures will enable Art Gallery & Museums staff to organise back room work including stock control, exhibition and display work for other museum and gallery staff, which will enable them to be available for public appointments during the remainder of the week.  Repair and maintenance work would also be carried out on a Monday wherever possible to minimise service disruption during the days open to the public.
