Lord Provost to launch Migrant Communities Information Point
20/05/08
The Lord Provost of Aberdeen, Peter Stephen, will officially launch the Migrant Communities Information Point at the Migrant Communities Open Day in the Information Centre, Central Library, Rosemount Viaduct, at 10am on Tuesday, 20 May, 2008.
The Information Point provides access to a wide range of literature on living, working and studying in Scotland in several European languages, including also information specific to the local area. The aim is to provide one central source of information for people in Aberdeen for whom English is not their first language.
A selected range of information in other languages is also available from the Media Centre, the Childrens Library and five branch libraries Torry and Ferryhill in the South Area of the City; Tillydrone in the Central Area and Bridge of Don and Northfield in the North Area.
The Library has produced an information leaflet entitled Services for Migrant Communities outlining the full range of services available and details of how to join the library. The leaflet has been translated into Polish and Russian initially, with other languages to follow. There will also be dedicated Library web pages describing services to migrants.
The launch of the Information Point marks the beginning of a Migrant Communities Open Day in the Central Library as part of Adult Learners Week 2008, celebrating the theme Intercultural Dialogue and Creativity.
The open day has been organised in partnership with Aberdeen College and activities include:
Tours of the Central Library highlighting services for migrant communities
Taster sessions with Aberdeen College staff in the Learning Centre
An evening of traditional music and dance from Scotland and Eastern Europe
