Lunchbreak Concerts season launches this week

29/09/08

The new extended season of lunchbreak concerts at the Cowdray Hall begins this week, with the usual popular mixture of visiting and locally-based musicians.

A special feature will be music from the North East with the Elphinstone Institute, Robert Lovie, and a welcome return visit by Paul Anderson.

The Edinburgh Quartet will give two concerts and the successful carols concert will be repeated.

Many outstanding young musicians from local schools, academies, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and the University of Aberdeen will be performing during the season.

Two concerts will feature music from important collections in nearby castles of the National Trust for Scotland, non-European music will be played on steel pans, and another concert of electronic music will come from the University studios.

Artistic adviser Roger Williams said: "We are delighted to have the fullest season we have ever had of Lunchbreak Concerts with more variety and links with more people than ever before. I hope the audience will be as excited as I am."

The first concert of the season takes place on Thursday [2 October] when clarinettist Colin Hunter and pianist Blair Cargill perform Schumann’s Fantasiestücke, Pierné’s Canzonett, Marcus Blunt’s Sonata and Arnold’s Sonatina.

The following Thursday [October 9], sees members of The North East of Scotland Music School - Moira Docherty, Colin Brockie, and Donald Hawksworth - perform GC Menotti’s The Telephone.

The concerts begin at 12.45pm unless otherwise stated on the programme, which is available from Aberdeen Art Gallery. Details of the concerts are also featured on the internet at www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/ACCI/web/site/xev_Event.asp

The Friends of Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums supports the Lunchbreak Concerts by providing a sandwich lunch that can be purchased at concerts held on Thursdays.

Entry to the concerts is free, but donations are gratefully received. All donations go directly towards supporting the performances and ensuring the continuation of the Lunchbreak programme.

The Lunchbreak Concerts season runs from 2 October until 30 April.
