Countdown begins for Aberdeen’s fireworks spectacular

23/10/07

Preparations are getting under way for this year’s annual City of Aberdeen fireworks display at the Beach on Monday 5 November.

The 20-minute spectacular — organised by Aberdeen City Council — begins at 8pm, but the family fun starts at 7pm with walkabout street and musical entertainment at the Queen’s Links. A catering service and toilets will also be available.

Local contractor Fireworx Scotland, of Inverurie, has been awarded the contract to deliver this year’s display, which will be fired from an area on the Lower Beach Promenade directly in front of the Beach Boulevard.

New for this year will be a fundraising “Fire Walk” organised by Macmillan Cancer Support. This will take place at the main event arena on Queen’s Links between 7pm and 8pm. Details on how to sign up or be a sponsor from Sarah Farquhar on 01224 701505; northscotland@macmillan.org.uk.

As usual, the fireworks event involves a number of road closures and parking restrictions in the Beach area (see below), and organisers are urging spectators to leave their cars at home and use the special park-and-ride bus service instead.

Event organiser Bill Farquhar said: “We are encouraging folk to join us at the Beach — or one of the other properly organised and managed events taking place across Aberdeen City and Shire — rather than stage their own fireworks or bonfire party.

“We’re also asking everyone planning to come down to the Beach to dress appropriately for the weather on the night and not to bring their own fireworks.”

Park-and-ride buses will run to and from the Beach from Bridge of Don (Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre), Kingswells, and Calder Park. Cost is £1.50 return for adults, and £1 for children and is payable on the bus. (Details to follow.)

ROADS AND PARKING

Roads which will be closed, between 7pm and 9.30pm on Monday 5 November will be: Beach Boulevard, from Links Road to Beach Esplanade; Links Road from Urquhart Road to Beach Esplanade; Beach Esplanade southwards from Accommodation Road to the roundabout at Burger King and Accommodation Road itself. For Blue Badge holders, disabled parking will be available on Urquhart Road.

A one-way system will also be in place from 7pm to 9pm at Greyhope Road with anti-clockwise traffic only from St Fittick’s Road to Sinclair Road.

There will be “no parking” restrictions in place on Links Road from Beach Esplanade to Urquhart Road and the Beach Boulevard from Links Road to the railway line.
