Committee to consider signing of Co-operation Agreement between Aberdeen and Atyrau
20/11/08
The proposed signing of a Co-operation Agreement between economic gateway cities Aberdeen and Atyrau in Kazakhstan has been recommended to councillors.
Aberdeen City Councils Economic Development Sub-committee will consider the proposal when it meets on Monday [24 November], ahead of a visit to the Granite City by a delegation from Atyrau in December 3.
The Co-operation Agreement recognises the positive results of the relations of Atyrau and Aberdeen over recent years and states a desire to establish co-operation at the level of gateway cities, on the basis of a Memorandum of Understanding between Aberdeen and Western Kazakhstan signed in 2003.
The report recommends that the committee approves the adoption of the agreement and authorises Lord Provost Peter Stephen to sign it on behalf of the city council.
The Co-operation Agreement contains several ways in which the links between Aberdeen and the central Asian city could be improved, including:
Promoting the exchange of official, sports, cultural, and creative delegations, as well as groups of business people, medical doctors, teachers, schoolchildren and students, between the cities;
Promoting the establishment of friendly and business contacts between the youth, cultural, creative, sports, educational and scientific establishments, commercial and public organisations, industrial enterprises and businesses of Aberdeen and Atyrau;
Promoting the development of tourism between the cities and promoting the development of tourist trips to Aberdeen and Atyrau from elsewhere in the UK and Kazakhstan;
Facilitating the distribution of national artistic, popular scientific, and childrens literature to promote the culture of Scotland and Kazakhstan.
If approved, the Co-operation Agreement will be signed by the Lord Provost and Atyrau Mayor Salimzhan Nakpayev on 3 December.
