Deadline looms for entries in Aberdeen garden contest

18/07/08

Keen gardeners still have time to enter the Aberdeen in Bloom Garden Competition 2008.

The closing date for entries in any of the 14 categories falls on Monday [July 21].

Categories 1-6 are for front garden displays which can be seen from the road, with first, second and third prizes on offer in six geographical areas of the city.

The other categories – for which a winner, a runner-up and a third-placed entrant will also be selected – are:

  • 7 – gardens not seen from the road;
  • 8 – industrial estates and office blocks;
  • 9 – churches, community facilities, garages, hotels and guesthouses;
  • 10 – summer bedding displays;
  • 11 – baskets and container planting;
  • 12 – best residential area, where residents have made a combined effort;
  • 13 – wildlife-friendly garden;
  • 14 – best allotment plot.

Entry forms can be found on the Aberdeen In Bloom page on the city council web site, at The Point and in city libraries. Judging will take place over three weeks from 28 July.

Entrants do not have to be available when the judges call but the garden or planted area has to be accessible. The competition is open only to residents and businesses within the city boundary.

Winners pick up garden centre vouchers and trophies, and all finalists are invited to a civic reception. All entrants to the competition receive a certificate.

The competition, founded in 1975, is sponsored by Aberdeen City Council, Country Ways saddlers and sports outfitters Michies the Chemists, Scotland Gas Networks, Dobbies Garden Centres and the Balmoral Group.

Entry forms can be submitted to the Aberdeen in Bloom Officer, Aberdeen City Council, Neighbourhood Services South, 2nd Floor, St Nicholas House, Broad Street, Aberdeen AB10 1BY. Further information is available from the Bloom Officer Steven Mitchell on (01224) 523529 or at stmitchell@aberdeencity.gov.uk .
