Bugs invade Aberdeen primary schools
30/04/08
A colourful array of weird and wonderful bugs has been cropping up in Aberdeen primary schools.
The creation of the beasties came about as part of a promotion strategy to help increase primary school childrens awareness of food poisoning bugs.
Environmental health officers at Aberdeen City Council invited all city primary schools to enter the Build a Bug competition, with a chance to win £250 to help fund education in food safety-related topics.
The children were asked to design and build a model showing what they thought a food bug would look like if it could be enlarged and seen by the human eye.
Pupils also had to provide: A name for the bug, details of where it lives, what illness it can cause; and how the bug can be controlled to prevent illness.
The fantastic results created by primary five pupils certainly left the judge, head of service, shelter and environment, Allan Whyte, with plenty of food for thought.
A lot of imagination and technical details went into each of the entries, which were of a very high standard.
Danestone Primary school pupils won first prize for their range of bugs: Sniff which lives on expired food and sucks your blood; Fonstededada which lives in fridges and bread bins, and rots your teeth; Brigonius the nit nipper which is a nit killer and is found on lice-infested heads; and Doodels, which lives in human homes and cleans up after people, living happily on a diet of dust and dirt.
Ashley Road School and Bramble Brae School were the runners up.
