We do like to be beside the seaside with beach officer

Children and adults hoping for some fun at Aberdeen beach this summer can look forward to a range of seaside themed events thanks to a new dedicated beach officer.

Ruth banks helping toddlers on the beachThe newly appointed officer, Ruth Banks, will be hosting activities, including sandcastle building, badge making, whale and dolphin watching and various competitions. 

Aberdeen is the European city with the highest number of reports of whale and dolphin sightings.

Ruth will be at the beach Thursday to Monday, between the hours of 10am and 6pm throughout the summer. There will be a notice board to keep all those interested informed of what is going on each day.

The appointment of a beach officer is part of the Scottish Government’s celebration of Scotland’s seas. 

The beach officer has been employed by the East Grampian Coastal Partnership with support the city council’s Energising Aberdeen Board, which finances schemes with money from the Scottish Government Growth Fund.

Another addition to the beach this year is improved first-aid cover, with local businesses such as Codonas offering to help with minor incidents.

Beach officer Ruth commented: “Aberdeen has a wonderful beach and I aim to help people enjoy it and hopefully learn something too.”

Ian Hay, Project Manager, East Grampian Coastal Partnership, added: “Aberdeen beach keeps getting better after receiving its first seaside award last year. The addition of the beach officer this year will help the beach become the pride of the city once again.”
