City council paves way for trust to revive the Lemon Tree

Aberdeen city councillors today agreed to work with Aberdeen Performing Arts to save the Lemon Tree.

The move to put the popular Aberdeen arts venue back on its feet was agreed unanimously by members of the city council’s resources management committee.

The Lemon Tree announced its intention to move towards voluntary liquidation in early December and appointed liquidators later that month. The Lemon Tree Aberdeen Ltd board took the decision because of financial difficulties.

APA subsequently approached the council with a proposal to take over the running of the West North Street building as a showcase venue for drama, dance, music and comedy.

Resources management committee members today supported a proposal to enter into a service level agreement and lease arrangement with APA, and an appropriate level of grant funding.

Committee convener Councillor Kevin Stewart said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have found a way of saving the Lemon Tree.  APA will bring expertise in marketing and management which I am sure will deliver a high-quality programme of performances, events and educational activities.

“The Lemon Tree is a hugely popular venue, drawing audiences from far and wide. The decision in December to close was very sad for everyone involved – but now, just six weeks later, we are looking at the prospect of the venue going from strength to strength.”

APA already manages the operations of Aberdeen Music Hall, Aberdeen Box Office and His Majesty's Theatre.
