Culter in full bloom as Beautiful Scotland judges open community garden
31/07/08
Judges from Beautiful Scotland will open a community garden in Culter on Monday (4 August).
The garden was previously a patch of waste ground which led to the old paper mills.
Now it has been cleared, shrubs and flowers have been planted and a new paved area with a bench created. There is also a plaque, which will honour all those who helped transform the area.
Local councillors, members of Culter Community Council and representatives of the organisations that supported the garden will also attend the opening.
The judges are in Culter as part of the process of deciding a winner in the Urban Community category of the annual Beautiful Scotland awards.
The urban community category award takes into consideration all aspects of a modern community.
As well as looking the floral displays, the judges also consider performance in recycling, involvement of young people, cleanliness and freedom from litter and graffiti, the condition of street furniture and local authority and community support for improvements.
This is the first time Culter has entered the awards. They are competing against the communities of Ardler in Dundee, Prestonfield in Edinburgh and Uddingston in Glasgow.
The results will be announced later in the year.
