Bug designs come to life as new entrance to park is opened

30/06/08

Children from Victoria Road Primary are set to attend a ceremony to mark the opening of the new playpark entranceway which they helped to design.

Pupils from Victoria Road Primary School with Councillor Yvonne Allan and Carla Angus (Arts development Tutor)Councillor for Torry/Ferryhill, Yvonne Allan, will officially open the playpark entrance at Victoria Road on Wednesday [July 2].

Workshops, led by Aberdeen City Council’s arts development team, community wardens and the countryside rangers, helped the children to create images inspired by bugs in the park.

The groups created individual drawings and collages, some of which were then used to create a life-size collage of the entranceway.

The collage was incorporated into the final design for the new metal arch. This was designed to complement recent improvements made to the park, including the new play equipment.

Blacksmith Derek Anderson and his team then created the final piece for the entranceway.

As part of the opening events, the countryside rangers will be running a bug-hunt and there will be a mask-making event run by the arts development team. There will also be a free ice cream for everyone during the afternoon.

Pupils from Victoria Road Primary school at the park. The Community Regeneration Fund and the Green Box Scheme supported the project.

Councillor Yvonne Allan commented:” "A big thanks goes to all the children and adults who participated in the workshops, and have helped to make such a difference to the park.  The area looks great and I am sure will be well used by the local community."
