Aberdeen EcoCity Awards recognise environmental schemes

29/04/08

Aberdeen EcoCity Awards 2008 was launched this week to recognise projects that protect and improve the local environment.

The annual award scheme will reward local environmental schemes for their hard work and commitment with cash prizes of up to £1,500.

This year’s categories are – individual; business; community, charity and voluntary group; and educational body. To be eligible projects must have taken place between April 1, 2007, and March 31, 2008.

The winner of each category will receive a prize of £500 to spend on an environmental initiative of their choice. The best overall entry will be presented with a special Gold Award and a further prize of £1,000.

A panel of experts will judge the entries and the finalists will be invited to an award presentation at the end of August.

Last year’s Gold Award winner was ‘Culter in Bloom’ for their Community Garden project at Coronation Road.

Sinclair Laing, Aberdeen EcoCity officer, said: “We were so overwhelmed by the response to our first Aberdeen EcoCity Awards in 2007, that we decided to make the scheme an annual event.”

Lead councillor for the environment Councillor Ron Clark commented: “Entries last year were exceptionally high with a wide range of projects from waste reduction to nature conservation. We urge all local green heroes to send in an entry this year and let us know what they are doing to look after our environment.”

The closing date for entries is June 2. Application forms are available at www.aberdeencity.gov.uk in the “Your Environment” section, or by contacting Amy Smith on (01224) 814585 or amysmith@aberdeencity.gov.uk .
