Ground-penetrating radar unearths the past of Kirk of St Nicholas, Aberdeen
27/11/08
An illustrated talk on the recent ground-penetrating radar survey (GPR) of the transept of the Kirk of St Nicholas Church, Aberdeen, will be given at 12.30pm and 2pm, on Wednesday, 3 December at the citys Maritime Museum, Shiprow.
Lead archeologist, Carmen Cuenca-Garcia took part in the excavation of the East Kirk of St Nicholas in 2006 and then went on to study MSc in Archaeological Prospection at the University of Bradford. As part of that course she carried out this GPR survey looking for evidence of buried features under the floors of the current church.
The survey revealed anomalies which might be sections of previous buildings on the site, or parts of the current church which have been demolished or altered. Carmen will present the evidence in the form of two and three-dimensional images and will discuss the results.
