EXPLORE ABERDEEN

Memories of radio times welcome

27/11/08

An oral history session will take place between 10am and 12noon on Tuesday, 2 December, at Aberdeen’s Maritime Museum, Shiprow.

As part of the museum’s Wireless exhibition members of the public are invited to come along on the day to share their radio memories with the City Council’s oral history officer.

The exhibition reveals how the development of radio changed the way we see the world, how we use the space within our homes and what we do with our spare time.

On display are items from Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums collections and contributions from the BBC.  Highlights include early crystal sets, transistor radios from the 1950s and 60s and the JVC Videosphere from the 70s, now a kitsch icon.

Curator of the exhibition, Jenny Brown, assistant keeper (Industry) said: "We’ve had a great response to the exhibition, with many people saying it has brought back lots of memories. By recording these reminiscences we will preserve them for the future.”

Aberdeen City Council’s oral history officer, Arlene Forman, said: “I visited the exhibition and it was great fun recalling and seeing examples of my family’s early radio and television sets.  Hopefully members of the public will come along to the exhibition on Tuesday morning [2 December] and allow me to capture their memories.”

The exhibition will run until Saturday, 1 March, 2009.
