A range of regulatory requirements is imposed on persons keeping livestock. It is considered that the most effective means of ensuring regulatory compliance is through a programme of inspection of holdings. These inspection visits focus on the following matters:

Checking the proper maintenance of livestock records
Checking the proper identification of stock
Checking the adequacy of biosecurity, and cleansing and disinfection measure
Checking for evidence of animal disease
Checking the general standards of animal husbandry and animal welfare
Checking the adequacy of arrangements for the loading, unloading and handling of stock and transport thereof
Promoting awareness of regulatory requirements and improving standards of stock husbandry and production.
