A range of regulatory requirements is imposed on persons keeping livestock. It is considered that the most effective means of ensuring regulatory compliance is through a programme of inspection of holdings. These inspection visits focus on the following matters:

  • Checking the proper maintenance of livestock records
  • Checking the proper identification of stock
  • Checking the adequacy of biosecurity, and cleansing and disinfection measure
  • Checking for evidence of animal disease
  • Checking the general standards of animal husbandry and animal welfare
  • Checking the adequacy of arrangements for the loading, unloading and handling of stock and transport thereof
  • Promoting awareness of regulatory requirements and improving standards of stock husbandry and production.
