A range of regulatory requirements is imposed on persons keeping livestock. It is considered that the most effective means of ensuring regulatory compliance is through a programme of inspection of holdings. These inspection visits focus on the following matters:
- Checking the proper maintenance of livestock records
- Checking the proper identification of stock
- Checking the adequacy of biosecurity, and cleansing and disinfection measure
- Checking for evidence of animal disease
- Checking the general standards of animal husbandry and animal welfare
- Checking the adequacy of arrangements for the loading, unloading and handling of stock and transport thereof
- Promoting awareness of regulatory requirements and improving standards of stock husbandry and production.
