City Centre Communications

There are a large number of new and exciting changes taking place in Aberdeen City Centre as part of the City wide regeneration. 

With so many projects underway we thought it would be helpful to provide links to a number of the main ones along with key contacts who can provide detailed information.

We will keep this information regularly updated so keep an eye out for even more of the exciting changes happening in your city centre.

Union Square

A £250 million development combining vibrant and diverse retail and leisure opportunities immediately adjacent to Aberdeen bus and railway stations.  Open from October 2009.

Bon Accord Masterplan

The Bon Accord Masterplan relates to part of the retail core within Aberdeen City Centre, and includes the Bon Accord and St Nicholas Shopping Centres and St Nicholas House, the former administrative headquarters of Aberdeen City Council. 

The Masterplan has been adopted by the Council as Supplementary Planning Guidance.  This means that the Masterplan will be a key consideration in judging future planning applications within the Bon Accord Quarter area.

Council Travel Plan

The Council Travel Plan demonstrates the Council's commitment to minimising the impact of staff travel patterns on the environment by reducing the level of unnecessary travel and encouraging those who have to travel to do so in a more environmentally-friendly and efficient way.

Local Transport Strategy

Aberdeen's Local Transport Strategy outlines the policies and interventions Aberdeen City will adopt to guide the planning and improvement of the local transport network over the 2008-2012 period.

Nestrans

Nestrans is the Transport Partnership for Aberdeen City and Shire with the responsibility to develop and deliver a long-term regional transport strategy  allied to taking forward strategic transport improvements that support and improve the economy, environment and quality of life across Aberdeen City and Shire region.

Aberdeen Harbour Board

Aberdeen Harbour is a world class port annually handling around 5 million tonnes of cargo, valued at approximately £1.5 billion, for a wide range of industries.

The Green Townscape Heritage Initiative

The Green Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) is a major, conservation led programme that has been set up to tackle the problems of run down historic buildings and streetscape in this central, but underused, area of Aberdeen that links the harbour and railway station to the main shopping centre of the city.

The Green THI will operate for 5 years from 2009 and will make available to owners of eligible buildings grants to undertake high quality repair, restoration and refurbishment of buildings.

Townscape Heritage Initiative: Streetworks and roadworks

Grant funding has been provided to Aberdeen City Council, as the statutory authority, to undertake improvements to the streetscape of the central area of the THI, while preserving and enhancing the historic street patterns and traditional granite setts and paving.

The work consists of removing the existing granite pavement, relaying and augmenting with new granite and the reshaping of same to modern standards together with some soft landscaping and revised drainage.

ASCEF – Union Terrace Gardens / Denburn Valley

Aberdeen City and Shire Economic Future (ACSEF) is the public private sector partnership which drives economic development in the North East of Scotland and also serves as Scottish Enterprise's Regional Advisory Board.

Business Improvement District

A Business Improvement District (BID) is a partnership between a local authority and the local business community to develop projects and services that will benefit the trading environment within the boundary of a clearly defined commercial area, where businesses have voted to invest collectively in local improvements which will benefit the local economy. 

A new company called "Aberdeen BID Development Company" has been established with the remit of creating a BID in Aberdeen city centre. The company is a partnership between Aberdeen City Council and private sector businesses.
