EXPLORE ABERDEEN

Education and Learning Home

Our shared vision is to make Aberdeen a City for Learning, ready to play a full part in the knowledge economy required to meet the needs of modern Scotland.  We want: scc_joy_of_learning

  • To provide quality learning environments;
  • To ensure that learning and teaching of the highest quality is provided;
  • To ensure that, within this type of environment, learners of all ages will develop confidence, be well motivated, literate and numerate;
  • To enable learners to participate as full citizens of a modern democracy, possessing core skills and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) awareness to work flexibly and to embrace change

We have agreed with our partners that our overarching aims will be social inclusion and lifelong learning - the belief that every child, whatever his or her social or economic background, should have the best possible start in life and should be enabled and encouraged to the maximum of their potential throughout life.

Aberdeen City Council is the Education Authority for the city.  The City Council's Education and Leisure Committee agrees education policies which are then implemented by Neighbourhood Services.

As the Education Authority, Aberdeen City Council is responsible for the following areas of educational services:

  • Nursery
  • Primary
  • Secondary
  • Special Educational Needs (including Educational Psychology)

In addition, the Education Authority has a range of establishments, which include:

  • Nursery schools and 1 children's centre
  • Infant/primary schools
  • Secondary schools
  • Special schools
  • Special needs units, bases and schools
  • Pupil support centres
  • Community centres/projects

As at the September 2004 census, these establishments cater for:

  • 2,551 nursery children
  • 13,234 primary pupils*
  • 10,598 secondary pupils*
  • 267 pupils within freestanding special education school

* These numbers include pupils within special education bases at school

Please note that the numbers shown above were correct as at the Scottish Executive Education Department Census as at September 2004. These figures will fluctuate as children move into and away from Aberdeen City.
