3.2 Interview procedure

 

The selection procedure should be organised through a selection panel that is representative of the project commission group - all key stakeholders should be present, but the panel should not be over large (3 - 4 people).It is important that a representative professional visual artist, lead artist, curator is present. The members of the panel should be involved at the earliest stage of the selection process, be fully informed through the commissioners / partners' project summary (2.1) and the artists brief (2.3), and remain involved to selection completion, to assure continuity of approach.

The panel may find it useful to 'score' against the set criteria as a way of achieving, recording and analysing consensus.It is sometimes difficult to compare artists work and creative approach if there is not an agreed methodology. If specific outcomes are desired in the project, such as education, community involvement or specialist skill, this may create specific weighting to the decision process.

It is good practice for the group to keep good records of the selection process and scoring, to review, inform future projects, and enable the panel to provide feedback to both successful and unsuccessful artists. The commissioning process should allow room for questions, rejection and change to approach as a learning space for both commissioner and artist.

A chair or spokesperson should be created on the panel to lead the discussion, act as the deciding voice when the decisions are split and to inform the artists of the final outcome.A facility should be made for unsuccessful shortlisted artist to briefly discuss the interview procedure and to learn through constructive feedback.
