EXPLORE ABERDEEN

What We Do

Acting within Corporate Governance, the unit provides an important service to members and officials while maintaining a strong public profile through our searchroom services and outreach activities.

We also provide a professional archives service for Aberdeenshire Council.

We ensure that the records are housed in secure accommodation under suitable environmental conditions on our two sites - the Town House and Old Aberdeen House.

Fragile material is protected and stored appropriately and conservation of documents is undertaken by specialists when required.

The records are sorted and catalogued by us and made available to the public in the our searchrooms. At present, collection level descriptions of some of our records are available on the Scottish Archive Network (SCAN).

Aberdeen City Archives offers a full range of modern reader services at our two public search rooms. Access to most of the records held in the City Archives is free to the public, however, users of certain classes of records for commercial purposes will be subject to charges.  Details of our charges are available via our Table of Fees or on request.

We offer:

  • E-mail, telephone, fax & postal enquiries answered (subject to our research charges)
  • Record surveys
  • Talks & workshops
  • Historical exhibitions
  • Reproductions of original documents

You can also download our Information Leaflets for further information or check our Frequently Asked Questions.
