This year marks the 50thanniversary of the introduction of the first EU legislation on human medicines. Council Directive 65/65 introduced clear rules on the authorisation and distribution of medicinal products and some founding principles that are valid until today. 27 January 2015 - Pesticides: Experts endorse new EU list of candidates for substitution

A Commission proposal to establish an EU list of 77 candidates for substitution was today endorsed by EU Member State experts. Candidates for substitution (CfS) are pesticides for which national authorities need to carry out an assessment to establish whether more favourable alternatives to using the plant protection product exist, including non-chemical methods. 9 January 2015 - Better protection for victims of violence anywhere in the EU

As of this Sunday, victims of violence - notably those who have suffered domestic violence or stalking – will be able to guarantee themselves better protection in any EU Member State. The new rules mean that restraining, protection and barring orders issued in one Member State are now quickly and easily recognisable across the EU through simple certification. 11 December 2014 - Aviation: Commission updates the EU air safety list

Today the European Commission has updated the European list of airlines subject to an operating ban or operational restrictions within the European Union (EU air safety list). 10 December 2014 - Juncker Commission takes oath of independence at the European Court of Justice

President Jean-Claude Juncker and the Members of the College of Commissioners are taking their formal oath of office today in Luxembourg, at the Court of Justice of the EU. With this "solemn undertaking", the members of the Commission are pledging to respect the Treaties and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU, to carry out their responsibilities in complete independence and in the general interest of the Union.
