Carve out a new hobby with woodwork classes
03/07/09
Aberdeen City Council's arts development team, based at WhiteSpace, 60 Frederick Street, continues its commitment to provide creative opportunities to people in the community by offering the chance to participate in woodcarving classes.
Participants will work with a woodcarver to learn traditional woodcarving skills and meet retired shipbuilders to learn their crafts. The workshops have been designed so that they could lead to vocational training.

Craftsmanship is a collaborative project between the arts development team, Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums, Aberdeen College and the North Forum.
Participants will learn about the city's heritage using the museum's collections and hearing oral histories from traditional craftsmen at the free workshops.
The arts development team believes that craftsmanship is a basic human impulse as it involves direct contact with materials, thus satisfying a physical relationship that is a fundamental human need.
Arts, crafts and design within a learning environment have a crucial role in providing positive educational experiences which can lead to qualifications and further training. Arts development is committed to providing such activities to meet the needs of individuals who might be under-represented within the creative industries.
Aberdeen City Council community arts officer Chris Ganley said: "This is an exciting opportunity to learn some new skills and to work with experienced craftsmen. We have a lot to learn from the very skilled craftsmen in the north-east who have worked in traditional industries."
All workshops are free of charge and can be booked through WhiteSpace. Places are limited so advance booking is essential. For more information or to book a place telephone (01224) 523640 or email cganley@aberdeencity.gov.uk
