Independent counting officer “encouraged” by turnout so far in Union Terrace Gardens vote

21/02/12

Crawford Langley, the independent counting officer for the referendum on the proposed development of Union Terrace Gardens, today [Tuesday, 21 February] said he has been "extremely encouraged" by the turnout for the vote so far.

Approximately 20,000 postal ballots have been returned and around 15,000 online and phone votes cast so far.

Around 165,000 voting packs were distributed to city residents on Thursday, 16 February and started arriving at homes the following day.

Voting closes at 5pm on Thursday, 01 March and Mr Langley is urging everyone entitled to vote to make sure their voice is heard.

He said: "I am extremely encouraged by the turnout at this stage in the process with a very high uptake of the online and phone voting systems. The voting process has been designed to be straight-forward, convenient and accessible to all.

"I would remind people that the online and phone voting systems are secure, free and available 24 hours a day. Casting a vote by phone, online or by post is explained in the voting packs in clear and concise terms."

Mr Langley added: "This is an important vote for the people of Aberdeen and I would urge everyone entitled to a vote to speak up, join in and be counted."

The counting of votes will take place on Friday, 02 March at the Beach Ballroom with a declaration expected later that day.
