Council qualifications focus on customer service

13/10/09

As part of a national initiative Aberdeen City Council staff will participate in new Customer Service Professional (CSP) qualifications.

Developed by councils for councils the CSP qualifications have been designed to be current and directly relevant to customer service issues within Scottish local authorities. Piloted by Renfrewshire Council the qualifications are now available to all 32 Scottish councils.

The qualifications have been created to focus closely on how councils can deliver efficient, effective, responsive and accessible services to customers, and to ensure that its workforce is competent, flexible and efficient as well as motivated and one that encompasses high standards and is focused on customer needs.

These are priorities identified by Aberdeen City Council and on which it is focusing its improvement activity. The qualifications are nationally recognised qualifications, certificated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and endorsed by COSLA, and are portable across all Scottish local authorities, ensuring that they represent a long-term investment in how council staff serves the public.

The city council has responsibility for a wide and varied range of around 800 services including street lighting, refuse collection, waste disposal, leisure services and many which remain largely invisible from day-to-day life, but which nevertheless make city residents safer and more comfortable.

It has always been the council's aim to make its dealings with the public as simple and effective as possible, and this is why it is pleased to announce that it is taking another positive step to ensure that its service to customers is amongst the best possible.

The CSP qualifications will provide council staff with another tool which will enable them to provide customers with a quick, efficient and pleasant service.

The first 20 candidates at Aberdeen City Council will start the qualification later this month [October] and are expected to complete the course within nine months.
