Nationality checking service offered for British Citizenship applicants
Aberdeen City Council will offer a Nationality Checking Service, in partnership with the Home Office, from October.
This allows anyone wishing to submit an application for British Citizenship to attend an appointment in Marischal College, at which their application will be checked and key documents verified and copied by a qualified member of staff, who will then forward the application, and payment, to the Home Office.
The nationality checking service is provided by local authorities across the UK, although it is presently only offered by two other Scottish councils Edinburgh and South Lanarkshire. It is expected that Aberdeen City Council will cater for much of the demand in the north of Scotland.
Lord Provost George Adam said: "Applicants will be able to meet face-to-face with our trained staff, who will ensure they are submitting the relevant documents properly.
"I am sure that this service will prove popular in our cosmopolitan city and with people living elsewhere in the North-east and Highlands, who would have otherwise have faced a lengthy journey south to receive this valuable service."
The service will ensure applications are completed correctly and that all the key documents are in place. These documents will be returned to the applicant at the end of the appointment, avoiding the need for them to be sent off with the application. The service ensures applications are validly submitted and that the unwaivable requirements for British citizenship are met. It cannot provide advice on nationality matters, or on a person's likely eligibility for British citizenship.
Applicants must apply in person. If you are married or in a civil partnership and want to make a joint application, both you and your partner must attend the appointment. This does not apply to children under 18. Appointments can take up to two hours.
The service will be provided by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, and will operate out of Marischal College on an appointments only basis. Appointments are made by telephone, by calling 01224 522322.
