Scottish first for Aberdeen Art Gallery’s major summer exhibition

11/07/14

The first major exhibition in Scotland to celebrate the work of world renowned knitwear and textile designer Kaffe Fassett will open on Saturday 12 July at Aberdeen Art Gallery, Schoolhill.

Selected specially for Aberdeen, Kaffe Fassett 50 Years in Colour will showcase pieces from a remarkable career which spans over five decades.

Kaffe began his career as a painter in his native California, coming to Britain in the 1960s. He discovered the joys of knitting while on a trip to the woollen mills in Inverness with fashion designer Bill Gibb.

Kaffe went on to create unique and imaginative designs for Gibb's early collections and fashion house Missoni. His passion for colour and pattern subsequently led him to design across a wide range of media including knitting, quilting needlework, rug-making, mosaic as well as painting and textile design – all of which feature in the exhibition.

Kaffe continues to teach and lecture worldwide and he will visit Aberdeen for a number of lectures and workshops. Places are still available for his lectures but his workshops are now fully booked.

The exhibition has also inspired a packed summer programme of family workshops to take place in the gallery.

The exhibition and programme of events are supported by Nexen Petroleum UK Ltd.

Christine Rew, Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums manager said: "We are thrilled to host Kaffe's first major exhibition in Scotland, a country which has been a source of inspiration for him throughout his career. His ability to blend colour and pattern in adventurous and innovative ways has won him a loyal following of supporters and we hope this fabulous exhibition will inspire a new generation of quilters, knitters and textile enthusiasts."

Kaffe Fassett, said: "The colours of the Scottish landscape have been a continuing inspiration to my textile design. Aberdeen and Fraserburgh were places I got to know in the late 1960s as I visited the young designer, Bill Gibb and his farming family. I always breathe a sigh of relief when I get off the plane and inhale that life enhancing Scottish air."

Nexen's donation is part of the company's community investment programme aimed at supporting charities and other good causes in the locations where the company operates.

Archie Kennedy, Managing Director of Nexen Petroleum UK Ltd said: "We are pleased to be able to support this exhibition which will bring Kaffe Fassett's inspirational work to Aberdeen. The exhibition is one of several arts and cultural initiatives that Nexen supports in and around the city. We believe it is important to help Aberdeen attract such renowned artists as Kaffe Fassett, building on the city's already rich culture and helping to promote what the city has to offer."
