Local pupils raise thousands for charities

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of pupils at Harlaw Academy six charities are set to receive thousands of pounds at the school's annual charities presentation event on Thursday, 11 March.
The main fundraising event is an annual nine mile forest walk by pupils and teachers, which family members and friends sponsor generously.
Every week pupils are also encouraged to take spare money into school for the chosen charities. A charity representative from each form class is responsible for the weekly collections organised by Dr Morrice, a science teacher, who has raised thousands of pounds over the many years that she has worked at the school.
The pupils held a vote to decide which charities should receive donations. Representatives of the charities will visit the school to speak to the pupils and to thank them for their efforts and to encourage them to keep giving so generously.
Pupils took a vote to decide which charities should be supported and this year the money raised will go to Clic Sargent, the SPCA, War Child, WWF and Breast Cancer Care and to Michael Weyde a local man who is hoping to raise £4,000 to build a house for a family in India.
Three pupils from the form classes which have contributed the most have been chosen to present the cheques.
Harlaw Academy's headteacher John Murray said: "The charities presentation is one of the highlights of our school year. Pupils have raised thousands of pounds thanks the Forest Walk last September and the weekly charities collection.
"I am extremely proud of the efforts made by all those involved and for the continued generosity shown time and time by the pupils, their families and friends."
