City’s olympic games aim to be fun

20/10/09

Once again Aberdeen City Council in partnership with Aberdeen Hotels Association is delighted to host the 2009 Funolympics for people of all ages with a disability.

Now in its 13th year the Funolympics continues to grow in popularity and success, with this year's event being held from 2pm to 7pm this Sunday 25 October, at Aberdeen's Beach Ballroom.

Due to the support of Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeen Hotels Association entry to the Funolympics is free.

The competition will start at 2pm and continue until 4.30pm and consist of 10 fun type games involving teams of up to eight people competing in a variety of games and sports. The games are adapted to suit competitors of all abilities.

Although the accent is on fun the competition is taken very seriously with all teams striving to take away the coveted trophy at the end of the day.

This year, 11 teams have entered representing clubs, organisations and hostels from across the city. Teams include Mythical Birds, Bob the Builders, Beacon Wheelies, Angie's Avengers, Bennachar Star and the Doric Dolphins will do battle with the rest of the teams to try and wrestle the trophy from the current champions Chalmer's Charmers.

Aberdeen Hotels Association is once again generously supporting the event. Their continued support since the start of the Funolympics has been tremendous and is very much appreciated. They will have staff on hand during the day to help and support the teams.

The presentation of the trophy and medals to all participants will follow immediately after the games at 4.30pm. This year, The Lord and Lady Provost of Aberdeen Peter and Sandra Stephen will present the trophy to the winners and medals to all participants.

Following the competition the teams will relax by enjoying a buffet and dancing to a disco until 7pm.

Lord Provost of Aberdeen Peter Stephen said: "The Funolympics is a fantastic event which brings a real sense of fun to sport although all the teams will be keen to win. It's a great occasion for participants and the audience alike."

Lead Councillor for Culture and Sport Martin Greig said: "Sport and physical activity need to be accessible to everyone and the Funolympics is a great way to support and encourage sporting activity. The hotels association is a marvellous partner for the council to have in realising this important project.
